Featured Enrichment Class of the Week: Martial Arts

Martial Arts has been our longest running Enrichment class and is now in its third session! Our experienced teacher, Judy Wright, has been a Martial Arts instructor since 1999 and is a 4th degree black belt in Kenpo Karate.

The class is designed to help students develop life skills such as confidence, self discipline, focus, respect, self control and mental and physical fitness.  Confidence is the first and most important; good posture and eye contact lead to “mental self defense.” Each class begins with Situational Awareness (pre-sparring) drills, then karate combinations of kicks, punches and blocks along with exercises.  Techniques are learned as a group in the air, then we participate in line drills on targets.  One life skill is highlighted throughout the class.  Every class ends with “we come in peace and friendship, never use karate to hurt anyone.”

Please take a look below to see the students in action!

A highlight at the end of each session is when students get to show off their newfound skills to friends and family at their White Belt Ceremony! Ms. Judy leads the students in group demonstrations and invites students to the front of the class for individual demonstrations as well. Below are some pictures from previous White Belt Ceremonies!
